{fashion} What (Not) to Wear at the Gym

Going to the gym has been a “habit” of mine for the past 8 years and as I have a keen eye for fashion and style I always tend to observe what people are wearing at the gym. For me people who work out fall into 2 broad categories: those who dress up to work out and those who don’t! I fall in the latter category. I make sure my gym clothes are clean and tidy and I even “invested” in Abercrombie & Fitch sweatpants and hoodie, but I wouldn’t go that far as buying Juicy Couture for my yoga classes or own numerous t-shirts so as not to be caught wearing the same one twice! Still, there are people who really don’t look at themselves at the mirror before hitting the gym and throw on them whatever clothes they might find handy and there are those who trying too much (never understood why).

So here’s a couple of advice on what to wear or not at the gym!

1) Avoid wearing leggings. I know, I know they are comfortable and I see many people wearing leggings, but did you know they tend to look sheer when they’re stretched?? Oh yes they do…even in the thinnest of persons! So if you don’t want to reveal in the rest of the class your choice of underwear, just skip them already.

2) Leg warmers is an accessory of the past, and there it should remain! Picture this: a lady wearing white top, white leggings, pink shorts and pink sweatpants! She really looked like she time-travelled!! I am all about freedom of style but I never understood the practical aspect of leg warmers or their aesthetic one…

3) Invest in a good sports bra. Push up bras might make your cleavage look nice, but I bet it’s not the most comfortable thing when bouncing up and down! In the past I’ve worn Triumph and Fila bras and lately I bought a sports bra from H&M (and I’m really satisfied with it).

And I’ve also created a polyvore set with some ideas on what to wear in the gym, just click on the photo to see details of the outfits! (I’m slightly obsessed with Oysho’s new gym collection by the way!)

  1. Haha – I know exactly what you mean about the sheer leggings! It drives me crazy. Just invest in some good quality yoga pants, please!

  2. Too funny! I usually wear black yoga pants and a jog bra plus a t-shirt. Very boring but Im not there to be looked at.
Funny story, once I was in a yoga class behind a woman wearing leggings with a hole in the crotch. You could say I got quite a view during downward dog!
